TUBBERCURRY GOLF CLUB CELEBRATES ITS 20 BIRTHDAY WITH BIG BIRTHDAY BASH

Tubbercurry Golf Club have arranged a big birthday bash to celebrate twenty years of the Club’s existence with a celebration weekend taking place on the 9 and 10 September. Speaking to one of the founder members, he said it was hard to believe that the Club was now opened for twenty years.

The mission which the original founder members had set themselves when they first met was to establish a superior nine hole parkland course in the Tubbercurry area. It is extremely gratifying to everybody that was involved from the very commencement of the Club that the mission statement as set out by the original founder members has been fulfilled within a very short period of time.

When the original founder members met in 1986 to discuss the possibility of forming a Club, they had no money, no land and no ideas as to how they could hope to achieve their target. However what they did have was an unbridled enthusiasm for the project as they saw it as being a project that would not alone fulfil the need for golfers in the South Sligo area, but would be a catalyst for business and for the social life of Tubbercurry and the surrounding areas at that time. What is even more unbelievable is that when the founder members were attempting to get the project off the ground, they were in the mid 1980s when the country was gripped in a recessionary period and well before the Celtic Tiger had been conceived.

It is testament to the original founder members and everybody that has been associated since then with the ongoing development of the Club that the course was fully developed and opened for play in 1991 and that a fully functioning Clubhouse was subsequently erected in 1995 and that the Club has provided untold benefit to the people of Sligo for the last twenty years.

The Club are celebrating the past twenty years by having a major birthday bash on Friday the 9 and Saturday the 10 September at the Club. On Friday the 9, there will be a major reception in the Golf Club at which the official DVD of the history of the Club from its inception will be launched. The Club were very lucky to have recorded from the very first day the lands were acquired and development commenced video footage and all of that footage has now been compiled onto one DVD which will be launched on the Friday night in the Golf Club and this video is undoubtedly going to become a collector’s item. On the Friday night the Club have invited all the original founder members, past Captains (Ladies and Gents) and past Presidents (Ladies and Gents) to attend the Clubhouse for the launch and the DVD will be on sale immediately following its launch. Everybody is welcome and, as a Club spokesman indicated, everybody in Tubbercurry has assisted in some manner shape or form with the formation of the Golf Club and everybody is welcome to meet in the Clubhouse on the Friday night to reminisce.

On both Friday the 9 and Saturday the 10 the Club are holding a scramble competition over the two days with an entry of €100 per team. On Saturday the 10 there will be a barbecue and music and a presentation in the Clubhouse and the entry fee for the scramble includes the barbecue. As many old friends are coming back to celebrate, it is expected that there will be a large number of teams entered on both days and early booking of a time-slot is advisable. Anyone wishing to enter a team or get on the timesheet can contact Ger Roche, the current Competition Secretary, on 086 327 7327.

While the Club does not have any longterm debt arising from the development of the course or the construction of the Clubhouse, the Club, like all golf clubs are experiencing difficulty in meeting the ongoing running costs required to keep the Club in pristine condition. For that reason, the Club would earnestly request as many people as possible to enter teams for the celebration scramble which, as well as celebrating the success of the last twenty years, will generate some additional funds to assist with Club finances.
