TUBBERCURRY GOLF NOTES

TUBBERCURRY GOLF NOTES
(For week ending Sunday 24th August)

President Mr Denis Scanlon’s prize was played for on Saturday last August 23rd over twenty-seven holes. With a capacity field playing for the prestigious Presidents Prize players teed off at first light. Early morning weather was dull and dry but come 9 o'clock this years August weather took over with heavy rain and wind coming in. However the course and the players withstood the conditions with some players coping better than others. By noon Pat Ridge was clubhouse leader on 68 nett, then Damien Ward posted a similar score, by late afternoon five players James McCarrick, Tom Durcan, Brendan Towey, Joey Wimsey and Francis Mulligan had returned a 70 nett score. At six o'clock the scene was set for the final nine holes, the top twenty-seven players took their positions for the shot gun start. Pat Ridge got rid of all his bad shots on the first hole and gave the rest of the field a chance. James McCarrick was now the man to watch as he was playing good golf. Christy and Joey Wimsey were also mounting a challenge. But as time moved on the skill and experience of the man who was in this position before came to fore as Pat Ridge made all the right decisions and won the Presidents Prize on a score of 102.5.

At the presentation of prizes President Denis Scanlon thanked everybody who made his day such a great success, he thanked the club members for playing in his competition and congratulated all the winners. Denis paid special thanks to Val, John and all associated with the course for having it in great shape under very poor weather conditions.

The winner of the Presidents prize was Pat Ridge on 102.5,

Second was James McCarrick on 104.5,

Third was Francis Mulligan on 105

Forth was Christy Wimsey Jnr on 105.5,

Gross was won by Mark Burke on 77,

Fifth was Joey Wimsey on 106, (Back Nine)

Best eighteen went to Damien Ward,

Best first nine was won by Padraic Walshe,

Best back nine was Michael Haran and

Best 3rd nine was Francis Haran.

Past Presidents prize was won by Peter King,

Men’s visitor prize was won by John Scanlon and

Best lady visitor was won by Roseleen Plunkett.

The Presidents prize to Ladies was won by Geraldine Ridge,
Second was Mary Costello and
Third was Mary Kilcoyne.

Simon Craig won junior boy s prize.

If there was a never give up prize then this particular man would surely win it, he played a near perfect ball to the eight green and then heard a sound, all assumed that the ball had hit a stone and bounced some place. However there was no sight of the ball, it was suggested that the ball had bounced into the temporary lake on the left, the player in question duly removed most of his clothes and swam in to try and identify his ball, having retrieved enough balls to set up a shop his playing partners signalled to call off the search as they had found his ball, he then calmly replaced his clothes and proceed to par the hole.

Congratulations to Club President Denis Scanlon, wife Betty and all the Scanlon family on hosting a most enjoyable day.

The winner of McCarricks Garage (Peugeot) sponsored competition on Sunday’s last was Christy Wimsey Jnr.
Next Saturday’s open competition is sponsored by Jack Murphy ( Outerwear ) and Sunday’s competition is an 18 Hole Stroke sponsored by Rochford Gallagher & Co.

Best wishes to Paddy Colleran and family on the opening of their new business premises in Charlestown.

17-08-2008 Padraig McDonagh wins Gillespie Cup for a second time and Betty Scanlon wins Lady Presidents Prize

TUBBERCURRY GOLF NOTES

(For week ending Sunday 17th August)

Monday last was a great day for all golfers in Tubbercurry and the surrounding areas as the Gillespie Cup was played for at Enniscrone Golf Club for the twenty Fifth time. Weather conditions were mixed with the heavy morning rain easing to showers in the afternoon. Weather did not affect the golfers for this event as everybody on the time sheet played. As the day progressed it became evident that anyone breaking the forty points was in with a chance.
The word was Eamon McGinley was in the clubhouse on 37 points, and then Chanel McCarrick came in on 38 points. But then Padraig McDonagh a previous winner played the best back nine of his life to bring in a score of forty-one points and win the Gillespie Cup. At the presentation of prizes Tubbercurry Club Captain and one of the chief organisers of the Gillespie Cup John Gillespie welcomed everybody and thanked all who played in the competition,
Captain of the society this year Pete Gillespie then delivered his speech. Among the high lights in Pete’s speech was a trip down memory lane on the history of how the Gillespie cup was set up some twenty five years ago. He thanked Joe Burke, Padraig Kennedy, Pearse Henry and the late Alex Henderson and Joe Masterson for helping set up the competition. He thanked his own family and especially his late mother for their support and help. He then paid tribute to the many golfers who played in the Gillespie Cup over the years and have now gone to their eternal reward. He thanked Francis Haran for sifting through the scorecards and sorting out the various category winners and special thanks their good family friend Eamon Gallagher for acting as master of ceremonies for the past twenty-five years.
After receiving his prize and donning the Green Jacked Padraig McDonagh thanked the Gillespie Family for the all the work they put into organising this day. The fact that this day has gone from strength to strength is a testimony to the organisers. Padraig thanked Enniscrone golf club, his playing partners and all who competed on the day. He said sometime winning a prize for the second time is not as great as the first time, but in this case it meant more to him second time round.

This was a extra special year for the Gillespie Family, not alone was it the twenty fifth anniversary of the Gillespie Cup but John is Captain of Tubbercurry Golf Club, Pete was Society Captain and their dad the late Jim Gillespie was Captain of the old Tubbercurry Golf Club Fifty years ago.

The top ten winners of the day were first Padraig McDonagh, second Chanel McCarrick, third Eamon McGinley, fourth Brian Ginty, fifth Christy Wimsey, sixth Jim McLoughlin, seventh Denis Scanlon, eight Francis Haran, ninth Gerry Connolly and tenth Tony Burke.

Congratulations to Mrs Ann Scanlon on hosting a great Lady Presidents Day on Sunday last. Weather conditions during the week were a cause for concern but luckily Sunday was fine. The winner of the Lady Presidents Prize was Betty Scanlon on 39 points, second was Mary Clarke on 39 points, third was Brid McHugh on 38 points fourth was Mary Costello on 35 points. Gross was won by Mary Kennedy, Past Lady President prize went to Kathleen Grady on 35 points. The best front nine was won by Geraldine Ridge and the best back nine by Mary K. Johnston.

TUBBERCURRY GOLF NOTES

(For week ending Sunday 27th January )

With weather conditions resembling a Sunday in early summer a large crowd took advantage of the good day and played in the 9 hole R/E competition. Taking first place on the day was a golfer who is never too far away from the winners enclosure, coming in on a great score of 23 points was Gurteen man Tommy Conlon.
Second and third place was a close encounter with a group of players returning scores of 21 points. After two holes Pat McKim had probably a re-entry in mind, but from once he stood on the third tee and faced for his hometown of Cloonacool he played like a man inspired and took second place with the best back six. Taking third place after getting his inspiration from his dad’s performance last week was Damien Cawley.

Next week sees the start of the Bank of Scotland (Irl Ltd) Super League.
